Stolid Pug

Friday, March 24th, 2006

Needing to break out of some monotonous CSS work, I ventured back to illustration with a scorching hot new model: Pugbutt.

I am rather unimpressed with it, he lacks emotion. Maybe I’m my own worst critic - but this illustration is far from finished. It definately does not have the polish that my previous Yoshi illustrations carried.

Is it the eyes? The shading? The lack of shading? Highlights? Shape? Back to the drawing board…

Flash on the Sony PSP!

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

PSPHacks.net and 71M, in cooperation with RK Digital.net, Heavy.com and Newgrounds.com have recently announced the release of a PSP Flash Player. This opens up a whole new world of multimedia, video and gaming experiences to Playstation Portable owners. Being a homebrew application, and as such not officially sanctioned by Sony or Adobe (who recently “merged” with Macromedia and aquired it) this Flash player is still in its infancy and does not support the entire featureset of the current Flash Player.

Web Browsing on a version 1.5 Sony PSP

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

Got a version 1.5 PSP loaded chock full of homebrew? Want to use the new browser found in 2.0 but without upgrading to 2.0? Well now you can! Until recently, browsing the web on a homebrew-capable version of the sony psp (firmware versions 1.0, 1.5, 1.5.1) meant one had to download an illegal iso containing one of three available browsers. Three games were found to contain web browsers, primarily as a method for obtaining additional online content such as extra levels and tracks. These games are: Fired Up, Tenchi No Mon, and the first game to have its online browser component ripped from it - Wipeout Pure. Now while this was a fantasitic solution for a while, the release of the much more refined and feature-rich NetFrontâ„¢ browser found in newer 2.0 updated PSP’s soon made these browsers look rudementary applets. But access to this nifty new browser required you to update your PSP to the homebrew killing version 2.0* - until now.

Designers, do your part - Print Green!

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

Hopper Press - Print Greener!Designers do not produce alot of waste, nor do they manufacture large amounts of goods. But even designers should have a conscious eye on how they impact the environment. How so? By printing greener.

http://hopperpress.com is project I have had the honor of working on in collaboration with All-Star Printing and Longbow Strategic Group. The Hopper Press project will hopefully serve as resource for printeries looking to green their processes, and for designers looking for green presses to run their jobs on. But why?

How to target the Sony PSP user agent

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

So you have created PSP -specific content and have a beautiful PSP -sized content. Now what? How do you stop conventional browsers from viewing and using your PSP website? For example, the WorldVIEW website is for Playstation Portables only. If you visit that page in a regular browser, you will be greeted with a message telling you that the website is for PSPs only. How can you pull this off yourself? Its simple.

Sony PSP Web Design Primer

Monday, January 16th, 2006

The Sony PSP is a portable gaming device. This cannot be denied. While homebrewed programs open more and more functionality to the PSP, it can never aspire to replace a desktop or laptop computer. It does, however, lower the barrier of entry into mobile content design. As a designer looking for additional skill sets to acquire, the mobile world has always been of interest to me. The strict restraints of a small screen, small file size requirements and the competing mobile standards are all new to a designer used to designing websites and applications for use large monitors. This design primer covers some of the basics of you need to know before designing a PSP compatible website. Note: The following information applies to the web browser bundled in the 2.0 firmware update.

What browser does the Sony PSP use?

Thursday, January 5th, 2006

Sony’s recently updated the operating system (2.0) on the Playstation Portable to include some new features, including an internet browser. How does it work? Is it fast? What featureset does it support? Does it render CSS? Javascript? How does my site look on a PSP? What kind of limitations are there?
